What We Stand For

Evergreen Resistance, a WA Chapter of the 50501 Movement

Our Mission

To strengthen our democracy, which includes: defending everyone's constitutional right and preserving the checks and balances of power within the federal government.

Our Values

Nonviolent
We commit to using nonviolent methods to create social change. Nonviolence is not passivity; it is the strategic use of social pressure to force institutions (governments, companies, schools, etc.) to change their behavior.
Nonpartisan
We commit to working with all groups who align with our goals and values, regardless of political affiliation. We encourage our members to engage with our democratic systems of governance, and we may partner with politicians for our actions, but Evergreen Resistance as an organization will not tell people how they should vote or participate in any political campaigns.
Grassroots
We commit to empowering local communities to organize in the ways that work best for them. We are a network of allied coalitions, not a hierarchical organization where decisions are made at the top.
Inclusive
We commit to continuously learning about intersectionality, privilege, and justice. It is our responsibility to actively unlearn our biases (including racism, sexism, ableism, and homophobia) and to recognize our privileges. In particular, as a predominantly white oranization, we must take deliberate steps to make our community safer for our BIPOC members.

Our Strategy

Strengthening our democracy and our communities will require sustained effort. We will focus our efforts on three areas:

Outreach
Educating ourselves and our communities about the challenges we face and the ways we can resist. Examples: zine distribution, public demonstrations, teach-ins, book clubs, etc.
Mobilization
Bringing new people into our movement, especially those who have been less politically involved until recently, and using our momentum to support our partner organizations. Examples: boycotts, protests, marches, calling representatives, etc.
Resilience
Building relationships and trust with our neighbors in ways that make our communities stronger. Examples: mutual aid networks, bail bond funds, barter economy, sharing skills and knowledge, etc.

Our Positions

How the members of Evergreen Resistance feel about most issues can be derived from our Mission, Values, and Strategy. However, the general membership can vote to officially endorse a statement or policy. These are listed here, and do not cover all policies or stances for state-wide Evergreen Resistance or specific local ER groups across the state, only those items the membership went to specific effort to endorse and publicize.
